Naturopathic Services – Dr. Ali Nurani, Naturopathic Doctor

What we do

NATUROPATHIC SERVICES

CLINICAL NUTRITION / DIET

Naturopathic doctors are very well trained and extremely well equipped to make knowledgeable, effective and safe evidence based dietary recommendations. There is a lot of confusing and misleading information out there and many patients encounter difficulties adopting a diet plan that works for them. Depending on the individual and health goal, various therapeutic strategies may be involved including: detoxification, specific diets, supplementation, orthomolecular therapy, use of food extracts, glandular concentrates and digestive aids. Whether your you are looking to lose weight, get stronger, improve a medical condition, improve physical performance or just want to look or feel healthier, a naturopathic doctor can, not only help achieve your goal, but help with long term sustainable and rewarding results.

LIFESTYLE COUNSELLING

An emphasis on lifestyle and physical activity is a key part of many treatment plans. The importance of an active and healthy lifestyle cannot be overstated as many studies have shown tremendous positive health benefits as a result of adopting an active lifestyle. Some of the lifestyle factors that naturopathic doctors would consider include balance between exposure to natural elements such as fresh air and water versus exposure to harmful substances, balance between rest and activity, etc while factoring determinants of health such as socioeconomic factors and stressors at an individual and community level. This may not be easy and making changes can be challenging. We will work together to come up with simple, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely goals to suit your needs while being supported every step along the way to keep you motivated and committed to achieving your desired health outcomes.

ACUPUNCTURE / TCM

Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is a coherent and independent system of thought and practice quite different to western medicine.

Whereas western medicine relies on identifying physiological symptoms, the TCM practitioner attempts to discern patterns of disharmony between various entities in the person as a whole. Two people with the same physiological symptom may receive two very different acupuncture treatments. The extremely powerful and grossly undervalued idea of balance and disharmony is the cornerstone of TCM where patterns of disharmony govern the kind of treatment. Although acupuncture is used commonly for local pain control, a naturopathic doctor trained in TCM relies on insertion of very fine needles into very specific anatomical points along specific meridians. Each acupuncture point has a unique therapeutic effect and commonly, depending on the health concern, a combination of points is selected to achieve an overall therapeutic outcome.

BOTANICAL MEDICINE

Alternative practitioners are increasingly using herbal medicines to treat a variety of medical conditions nowadays. Unlike orthodox drugs that have a single ingredient, plant medicines contain many ingredients and may have several simultaneous therapeutic actions in the body. As a naturopathic medical practitioner versed in human physiology and pathology, there are a number of important factors that I consider when prescribing herbal medicines for an individual patient. These include herbal actions, affinity for certain body systems, specific remedies for an illness, herbal biochemistry, effectiveness, safety and my intuition. Each prescription is intended for maximum compliance and benefit to stimulate healing and balance. Herbal medicines in the form of extracts, tinctures, capsules and tablets as well as teas may be recommended during your visit. Care must be taken when patients are taking other medicines while on their herbal prescription as it could lead to unintended interactions.

LAB TESTING

Lab tests are typically recommended for a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan. We typically refer patients to their medical doctors for standardized lab tests such as blood glucose, cholesterol, etc as the cost of these tests are not covered under our health care system. For those patients who do not have a medical doctor, we are able to order these tests at a cost. The information obtained from these tests can be of great assistance in determining further testing and treatment. It is also important to note that in naturopathic practice, your test result may be “normal” on a routine requisition, but not optimal. Specialized lab tests include food sensitivity, hormone levels, environmental exposure, etc offer valuable information and can also be ordered through the clinic. It is recommended that the patient bring all recent lab work to their visits. To view a list of specialized lab tests available CLICK HERE. Please note that in Alberta, fees for naturopathic lab tests are not covered by Alberta Health insurance, and are subject to an additional cost.

PHYSICAL EXAM

The purpose of the physical exam is to elicit important clinical information to come up with a sound assessment and clinical strategy in a professional, comfortable and relaxed environment. Thorough and accurate physical examination is conducted with an emphasis on clinical assessment and clinical reasoning. This will include comprehensive and focused physical examinations as well as regular clinical check-ups. Vitals and other routine screening physical exams performed regularly. Some common physical exams include heart, lung, head and neck, abdominal, neurological, dermatological and musculoskeletal. For new patients, a comprehensive physical exam is recommended if you haven’t had one in over a year. Comprehensive physical exams along with a review of symptoms usually take one full visit to complete.

PHYSCHOLOGICAL COUNSELLING

Naturopathic doctors are well trained in mind-body medicine to address a number of mental health challenges including depression, anxiety, stress, personality and others. Through the use of several evidence based techniques and tools, the doctor and patient try to uncover underlying factors that may predispose and contribute to ones mental health challenges before initiating treatment. A commonly used technique in psychological counseling is called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT. In CBT, attention and awareness is drawn to the interplay between one’s thoughts, environment, moods, behaviors and physical reactions. Patients are taught to become more active in their care and to identify when to use the provided tools and techniques to achieve long lasting successful treatment. Every patient receives a fully personalized treatment regimen and sometimes a complex treatment plan may be recommended that may include a combination of other modalities.
